Mommyz Love, a breastfeeding advocate brand, published a guide about the AHCA breast pump and breastfeeding benefits that nursing mothers can utilize this 2019. Breastfeeding has become a powerful movement in the past decade that the World Health Organization and UNICEF, along with health insurance providers, has prioritized it in recent years.

Through the US government’s Affordable Health Care Act, many affordable and accessible benefits towards mothers have become available. However, many women still do not know the benefits that they are eligible for. Which is why Mommyz Love published the article about the said benefits.

According to Stephanie Murillo, co-founder of Mommyz Love, "It wasn't until a few weeks after I had Samuel that I realized that I was entitled through the Affordable Health Care Act to get a free breast pump. That is just one benefit. In fact, I learned that each insurance company has its own maternity and breastfeeding benefits such as breastfeeding consultations with an IBCLC, or breastfeeding accessories and supplies. I would always advise calling your insurance company as well as your local hospitals to see what breastfeeding benefits they can offer or you can apply for, you will be surprised that quite often there are many things you can take advantage of."

The current list of benefits for women include:

Screening for gestational diabetes, counseling for interpersonal and domestic violence, DNA testing for high-strain risk of HPV, screening and counseling on STIs, well woman visits, along with breastfeeding support and services.

There is an important distinction to be made, however, between employer-sponsored coverage and individual coverage.

For employer-sponsored coverage, plans before March of 2010 are “grandfathered,” meaning, they do not cover breastfeeding benefits, as well as other preventive services related to it - they do not have to comply to the new law since it is not retroactive in nature as long as the plans do not undergo changes. If the plan has gone through massive changes in terms of cost and benefits, they are considered “ungrandfathered,” which means they are now required to cover preventive services breastfeeding, as well as support and supplies.

Coverage that were bought in a health insurance marketplace is considered as new plans and they all adhere to the new health care law.
