“It’s Time to Close the Pleasure Gap” Says Acclaimed Professor and Author

With the launch of her book, Becoming Cliterate, Dr. Laurie Mintz (PhD) aims to close what is known as the gendered pleasure gap that exists between men and women. For example, one study published on NCBI (PMID:16418125) found that 39% of women versus 91% of men said they usually or always climaxed during sex with a partner. While this study didn’t differentiate the context of the sex, in a Sage Journals study (Volume 77, Issue 3), 85% of men vs. 68% of women reported reaching climax during their last sexual encounter that occurred in the context of a committed sexual relationship. And, most striking of all, in data that Mintz collected, 55% of men vs. 4% of women report usually reaching climax during first time hookup sex.

Dr. Laurie Mintz collected this data, as well as other data she presents in Becoming Cliterate, from students in her award-winning Human Sexuality class at the University of Florida. She also credits her students as the inspiration for her new book. “The reason I wrote Becoming Cliterate is because, through teaching Human Sexuality to over 150 students a year, I became aware just how misinformed this generation is about sex in general and female pleasure in specific” says Mintz.

In Becoming Cliterate, Dr. Mintz exposes the cultural problems perpetuating this misinformation and what people can do about it. By dispelling cultural lies, misunderstandings, and myths about female pleasure, the book tackles both personal and political problems and replaces them with updated outlooks and practical skills Mintz feels are needed to change the collective perspective on sex.
